Welcome to Grampian
Aberdeen is one of the world’s major centres for the oil and gas industry and one of the most successful and prosperous regions of the UK.

Oil has not changed the underlying character of the area, and with its unique combination of rural and urban environments, superb transport links and friendly, welcoming people, we can promise you that Grampian, and in particular NHS Grampian, will provide an excellent living environment.

Please take your time and read through the following to learn more about us, be astounded by the benefits available and apply for the many excellent employment opportunities we have on offer. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you success in your applications.

About Us

At NHS Grampian we have thousands of dedicated staff, all striving to provide the highest quality of healthcare, including almost every major medical specialty, to the population of North-East Scotland. NHS Grampian are extremely proud of all of them, and of their unique contribution to the work we do every hour of every day of the year. So, as you’ve probably gathered, in addition to your expertise, appropriate qualifications and the experience necessary for each post we advertise, we also look for commitment, friendliness and enthusiasm in our employees. People matter at NHS Grampian and we welcome applications from every sector of the community.

One of the greatest pleasures of living and working here in the North-East of Scotland is very different from the rest of the country. There is a charming balance between the cosmopolitan, internationally recognised oil capital that is Aberdeen, memorably described as a city with the culture of a village, and the rural, relaxed, outdoor lifestyle of the coastal and inland towns of Aberdeenshire and Moray.

Benefits and Rewards

Where do we begin? There are so many different benefits to working with NHS Grampian. Perhaps the most important are the quality of life, the range of outdoor leisure pursuits, the overall prosperity of Aberdeen, the stunning scenery of the coast and inland countryside, and, above all, the friendliness of the people.

However, there’s also a lot more to a career with us than these. Equally as important, the NHS now offers extremely competitive pay, as well as, the NHS pension scheme, a generous annual leave provision of up to 33 days, plus 8 public holidays and lots of training and career development opportunities.

Aberdeen

To ensure that your working life is simple and fair, we have a whole raft of policies, on family-friendly working, on career breaks, on equality and diversity.

NHS Grampian Day Nursery Service is provided for children of staff, either directly or indirectly, on two of our major sites, including our new state of the art, Little Acorns Day Nursery in Aberdeen. The nursery service is paid for by staff, but you can get support from the salary sacrifice scheme which will reduce the cost. We’re very much a family-focused organisation, emphasising dignity at work and seeking to enhance the work-life balance of all staff. We recognise the need for work life balance for all, not just those with families.

Union Square

There are also staff discounts and offers from the staff discount directory, the Grampian Credit Union (which is a savings and loans Co-operative), lots of opportunities for sport via the NHS Grampian Sports Committee, and our commitment to our employees’ health and well-being through the national Scotland’s Health and Work Scheme.

Training, Learning and Development are a fundamental part of everyone’s experience at NHS Grampian. Everyone has a Personal Development Plan and there are numerous initiatives and help with courses (including external courses), which will enhance your CV and your professional skills. We work closely with NHS Education for Scotland to deliver first class training programmes for Doctors of all grades and specialties.

Education

The Scottish education system has been famed, literally, for centuries, and with good cause. From primary school through secondary and beyond to tertiary education, Aberdeen has a well deserved reputation for educational excellence. With one of Britain’s ancient universities, and one of the most recent, as well as Colleges of Further Education and Adult Education classes and courses in each of the main centres throughout the region, Grampian will be able to cater for all of your, and your family’s, educational needs.

Primary and Secondary Education

Nursery, pre-school and primary schools are widely spread across the region and range in size from small schools with only a few teachers through to larger establishments in the towns and city. The region’s secondary schools are, naturally, larger, and, of necessity, based in the country towns and the city of Aberdeen. There is an excellent range of both public and private schools, at all levels. It is also worth noting that NHS Grampian has its own nursery facilities and staff with children under school age may apply for a place.

Details of public schools in the North-East of Scotland can be found by visiting the council websites listed below and details of private schools can be found by searching www.scis.org.uk.

Further and Higher Education

Grampian is home to seven major research institutes, three colleges of further education and two universities. Whether your, or your family’s, interests are vocational or academic, practical or theoretical, SVQ or degree level, you’ll be able to find a course that matches your abilities and ambitions. NHS Grampian has many links with the various educational institutions in the area and we welcome the opportunities provided by them to help develop and educate our staff.

Accommodation

In an area of contrasting towns and landscapes there is, naturally, a wide range of housing available to suit all lifestyles and budgets.

Accommodation is available in the private and public sectors and there is a good range of rented property for those who would prefer not to buy. In the current economic situation, house prices both purchase and rental have fallen considerably.

Aberdeen, as the region’s principal city, has flats and townhouses, modern housing estates and magnificent older properties, many built in the sparkling local stone that gives Aberdeen its other name – The Granite City. Housing in the rural towns, whether inland or around the coastal fringe, is equally varied, but whether you prefer town or country, we can guarantee there will be something to your taste.

Rented Housing

NHS Grampian are pleased to have formed a relationship with several of the Housing Associations that cover the Grampian area and in doing so recognising the importance of affordable accommodation options to potential employees.

The oil industry has encouraged a thriving private rented sector and landlords tend to offer fully furnished properties. In Aberdeen you will be able to rent most types of property, ranging from one bedroom flats to mansion houses.

To give you an idea of prices, one bedroom flats are typically available around £500 per month.

Normally, a deposit and one month’s rent in advance are required. You can get more information on private rented property throughout Grampian from Aberdeen Solicitors Property Centre.

Private Housing

Aberdeen Solicitors’ Property Centre provides the best source of private housing visit www.aspc.co.uk

You may also find www.zoopla.co.uk of use in looking for information about housing and house prices in Grampian.

Please remember if you are moving to the area from elsewhere in the UK that Scotland’s system of buying and selling houses is different from in England and Wales. Many people believe that our system is simpler and better. Essentially, the basic difference is that once an offer has been accepted for a house sale it is legally binding. Please make sure you take appropriate legal advice.
