Neonatal registrars will spend their 12 months rotating through the two Neonatal Intensive Care Units in WA – one in the tertiary perinatal centre King Edward Memorial Hospital KEMH and one in the tertiary paediatric centre, Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

The KEMH rotation will provide an opportunity for clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of acute neonatal problems, especially those associated with prematurity. There will also be a wealth of experience to give competence in delivery room resuscitation, ventilator management of acute respiratory diseases, continuous monitoring and nutritional support of the very preterm or very sick newborn.

In the PMH neonatal intensive care unit, there will be exposure to and involvement in the diagnosis and management of a variety of neonatal surgical conditions and congenital anomalies. In addition, most outborn infants who require neonatal intensive care are transferred to PMH neonatal intensive care unit.

Neonatal registrars will be involved in the Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS) WA, with retrieval and transport of the sick newborn over long distances frequently using the Royal Flying Doctor Service within Australia. There is also the potential of involvement in retrieval and transfer of cardiac patients to the children’s hospitals in Melbourne and Brisbane.

You will also have a role in the teaching of resident medical officers, nursing staff and medical students.
