About the Community of Edson:

The Town of Edson is located within Yellowhead County on the TransCanada Yellowhead Highway 16; 199 km west of Edmonton, 163 km east of Jasper, and 453 km northwest of Calgary.

The Town of Edson was incorporated in 1911 and was named after Edson J. Chamberlain, the General Manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad.

Today, with a population of 8,646 Edson is one of the largest towns in the Province. Edson has a full range of recreational and cultural facilities, excellent health care services, a high quality education system, and a vibrant business sector that serves all of the shopping needs of the local and area residents. Edson serves a trading population of approximately 14,000 people.

Edson is strategically located on Highway 16—the TransCanada Yellowhead Route—and benefits from private, commercial and industrial traffic. The TransCanada Yellowhead Route carries some of the heaviest traffic flow in Alberta, and has been officially declared the second TransCanada Highway. Approximately 18,000 vehicles pass through Edson daily.

The Town’s growth is based on the rich natural resources in the region. Initially, the railroad provided access to the rich Alberta Coal Branch, and in the 1930’s coal from the Branch was being distributed to Canadian and world markets. In the 1960’s, petroleum and related industries added to the prosperity of the Edson district. In addition, the coal industry was revitalized in the 1970’s with the launching of two mines in the area. The forestry

industry has been a major employer in the Edson area since the Town’s inception. In the future, the area’s natural resources are expected to remain major contributors to the Edson economy.

Resources available include coal, clay, sand/gravel, oil and natural gas, and timber.

Products available locally include forest products, straw, hay, cereal grains, dairy products, cattle, poultry, horses, sheep, hogs, honey, seed potatoes and vegetables.
