Responsibilities/Duties:

We are seeking interested physicians to take part in the Addiction Recovery and Community Health, (ARCH), Clinical Consultation Service at the Peter Lougheed Centre.

This initiative is aimed at improving health outcomes and health care access to patients with substance use issues who may also be socially vulnerable. Based primarily at the Peter Lougheed Centre this specialty consult service will help to ensure that the emergency department patients and hospital inpatients receive comprehensive and patient-centered care that incorporates addiction management and is sensitive to the patient's social determinants of health. This will result in more efficient health system use by these patients, thus reducing the burden of care currently placed on the emergency department and inpatient services.

The successful candidates will provide one week of coverage at a time (8-11 hours per day on site, on call 0800 - 2100, for 7 days per week). The number of weeks of service per year per physician will be negotiated on an individual basis with the PLC ARCH Medical Director. Additional single days of coverage may also be available.

This service sees patients at the Peter Lougheed Centre who have an active substance use disorder who may also be dealing with social inequities. Duties include: seeing new consults from inpatient services and the emergency department, rounding on inpatients requiring follow-up, seeing patients in a transitional clinic, and co-ordinating patient management with both the most responsible physician and the primary care physician as well as with the multidisciplinary ARCH clinicians.

The overall goal of the PLC ARCH Team is to improve health outcomes and health care access for patients with substance use issues including those who face social inequities. This specialty consult service helps to ensure that emergency department patients and hospital inpatients receive comprehensive and patient-centered care that incorporates addiction management and is sensitive to the patient's social determinants of health. This results in better health outcomes for the patient and more efficient health system use.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have an MD and will be eligible for licensure in the province of Alberta. They will be expected to secure a Clinical Academic Colleague appointment with the relevant Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. They must have or be working towards certification in Addiction Medicine and have an active methadone exemption status and training and experience with opioid agonist therapies
