Surgical Colleague - Inpatient Services

Acute Care Coverage is currently recruiting independently licensed Physicians for the General Surgery Service at the Sturgeon Community Hospital. This demonstration project is interested in Physician’s with an Internal Medicine or Family Medicine background, with the key focus of meeting the medical needs of surgical inpatients. An evaluation of the program will be completed after one year to assure that the primary objective of this project is being achieved.

The Surgical Colleague will be required to work a rotational schedule consisting of 7 consecutive day or night shifts. All shifts will be 14 hours in length with potential opportunity to provide surgical assist. The Surgical Colleagues being hired will be integrated into the current healthcare team. Successful candidates will be contracted annually and remuneration will be primarily through FFS with an income guarantee.

All clinical activities are performed under the direction of the most responsible/attending physician. Clinical activities are focused on the medical needs of surgical patients that can include, but are not limited to, completing admissions, providing daily assessments and the active management of inpatients in the service.

In addition to completing Consults on Emergency and Ward patients, the physician will do occasional/basic obstetrical and orthopedic assessments, assist in the OR for C-sections in the morning and occasionally assist in the OR during the day/evening. The physician will occasionally assist/help in Outpatients Clinic when all other duties have been completed.

The physician will admit patients and ensure proper medication reconciliation and allergy profiles. He/she will develop a treatment plan in consultation with the attending physician. He/she will manage issues that arise with admitted patients on the surgical wards and follow up on labs, investigations and procedures and communicate the results to the attending physician in order to expedite patient care.

The surgical ward physician will liaise with patients and their families to aid in their understanding of their disease process/treatment plan. He /she will help in discharge planning and on occasion will dictate discharge summaries/consultation notes.

Qualifications:

Physicians must be eligible for independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, appropriate Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage, and ACLS certification. Applicants must have current experience in the clinical management of acute care inpatients, and/or experience in emergency room services. This position is not eligible for AHS sponsorship of a College of Physicians and Surgeons Practice Readiness Assessment

Compensation:

Successful candidates will be contracted annually and remuneration will be primarily through FFS with an income guarantee.
