About the Community of Peace River:

Peace River is an urban and vibrant large town in the heart of northwest Alberta. Geographically, the town has been gifted with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Alberta. The town itself is set on the banks of the Peace River and the surrounding neighborhoods straddle the river valley, providing breathtaking views enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Serving a large area, the current hospital opened in 2001 and provides care and a vast array of facilities to a population of up to 28,000 people, while the previous hospital was established in the early 1970s. The hospital meets the daily needs of a town that continues to grow – the recent census showed an expansion of 7% – and the population of Peace River is currently close to 11,000 residents.

Culturally, this is a thriving community and Peace River was awarded the title of Cultureville by CBC in the past. A progressive theatre company is active in the community, the Museum hosts monthly exhibitions, several music venues attract national acts on a regular basis and one of Alberta’s most popular two-day music festivals – Peace Fest – goes ahead each July, taking advantage of the long, warm summer nights.

An endless network of trails straddle town and can accommodate running, hiking, biking and exploring and those who wish to take things more leisurely can avail of the eight kilometer paved path that runs along the river. Fishing, boating and photography are popular river pursuits and guarantee a full supply of fresh air for all members of the family.

Continually expanding and pushing the boundaries, Peace River is currently in the process of creating one of Alberta’s largest and most diverse municipal urban parks on the site known as Misery Mountain. This park – with a chairlift to the peak of the hill overlooking the valley – will allow for activities such as mountain biking and horseback riding in the summer, while in the winter, the Ski Hill at the foot of the mountain opens for business with downhill, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing offered as choices. You will also find an indoor swimming pool, a hockey arena, several outdoor rinks, squash and racquetball courts, gymnasiums and numerous sports clubs within the community.

Peace River is home to an impressive combination of businesses including locally owned downtown stores and restaurants, as well as nationally and internationally recognized retailers, attracting shoppers and diners from all corners of the northwest.
Peace River is a welcoming community and people from across the globe are proud to call it their home.

The Town of Peace River is on hand and happy to provide more information, to answer any questions or to organize an orientation through a part of the world they would like everybody to experience and enjoy.
