We currently have fantastic opportunities for dynamic and motivated adult nurses, who take pride and ownership in delivering high quality patient centred care to join our team based in the Clinical research facility (CRF).

Clinical research nursing is an exciting and rewarding patient centred career. You can experience this for yourself here at UHS which is a major national site for clinical research, conducted by the NIHR Southampton clinical research facility.

As a research nurse you will be involved in all aspects of research delivery from study start up through to completion of a study. You will be based in one of our CRF adult nursing teams and you will have the opportunity to work on a range of studies across different specialities including haemophilia, respiratory, rheumatology, immunology, neurology, allergy, metabolic, infectious diseases, cardiology and oncology. The CRF is an accredited phase I clinical research facility and therefore you will also work on ground breaking medication and medical equipment devices being trialled in human beings for the first time. 

In the CRF and in all research the well-being and safety of our research patients/ participants is at the heart of all we do as is our confidence that the data we provide is accurate and reproducible.

We are looking for nurses with

  • a strong interest in working in clinical research
  • a good clinical background in nursing
  • a compassionate and caring approach to patients, families and colleagues
  • an excellent level of written and verbal communication skills
  • IT skills

No research experience is necessary as you will receive a thorough and in-depth induction programme to support you in gaining knowledge and skills in research nursing. Study specific and on-going education takes place to ensure you are confident to care for patients enrolled in the various studies being run by the CRF. In addition the CRF has close links with the University of Southampton, the National Institute for Health Research and many research networks, all providing a range of opportunities to enhance research nursing career education and training. Partnerships with the University of Southampton create academic possibilities for staff as well. We are interested to hear from motivated, caring and inquisitive nurses who want to improve the care of patients now and also find new treatments for the patients of the future.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
