Senior fellow in cardiac intensive care

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust - More jobs by this advertiser

Applications are invited for a Senior Fellow in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Intensive Care commencing 1st March 2019 or as soon as possible.

This post is based in the Wessex Cardiac Centre, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.  The unit is the third busiest UK cardiac centre with some of the lowest mortality rates. The ITU has 16 beds and there are 22 all day cardiac theatre lists per week.

This post combines clinical duties with an excellent teaching programme and research opportunities.  The clinical component provides training in adult (and potentially paediatric) cardiac anaesthesia and adult cardiac intensive care, and includes on-call cover for the adult cardiac intensive care unit.

There are only a few European centres accredited to run the EACTA fellowship programme. Southampton has one of the longest and most successful programmes. There is formal consultant-led weekly teaching in cardiac anaesthesia, ITU and transoesophageal echocardiography. Extensive support and training is given to those undertaking TOE accreditation.

Clinical Opportunities

The post offers wide exposure to all types of acquired adult and congenital cardiac disease with the exception of cardiac transplantation.  There is close involvement with the diagnosis and surgical or other interventional management of cardiac disease.  There are considerable opportunities for perioperative anaesthetic and intensive care management, including the use of perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography, pulmonary artery catheterisation, nitric oxide, aortic balloon counter pulsation, haemodiafiltration and the insertion of percutaneous tracheostomies. There will be some opportunity to gain experience in ECMO and other mechanical circulatory assistance but we are not a cardiac transplant centre.

This post does not have educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and does not carry a National Training Number.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate clarity and breadth in use of verbal and written communications in relation to our patient group.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach confirmation to your application.

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists) which will be published and available at time of offers.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary -  MT04        £47,132

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
