The OA psychiatric services in Argyll and Bute are provided by two teams over the two operational areas. The aim is to provide high quality services within local communities and early intervention in terms of diagnosis and treatment. An Integrated Care Pathway for the treatment of patients with dementia has been developed and is being used to inform the redesign process. Both provide a high standard of care and accommodation for patients in Argyll and Bute who require psychiatric inpatient services. There are separate facilities for Older Adult patients who require admission due to dementia. Video Conferencing facilities are used to strengthen links between the hospital and community teams. The sector consultant team has close working relationships with the older adult mental health service staff in the community. There may be junior doctors in training and/or medical students attached to the team at any one time.

This post is under the direct supervision of the sector general adult consultants on call. It includes the provision of community psychiatric care to the designated sector of Argyll and Bute, with outpatient clinics, home and nursing home or other care facility visits as appropriate, liaison with GPs, team working with colleagues from the CMHTs and the hospital sector team, and liaison-consultation work in general hospitals. The post holder supports the inpatient care for sector patients admitted to Succoth ward Argyll and Bute Hospital.

Post holders will be encouraged to develop a special interest in keeping with the needs of the service. There is an enthusiastic peer group of Specialty Doctors in Mental Health which meets regularly and there are regular educational events organised as part of our in-house programme. There will be a requirement for 1 in 7 on call in a middle grade position with a designated consultant as back up.
