We welcome candidates to apply for this opportunity to join the Upper GI/General Surgical Team at York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust has an ambitious programme of service modernisation and a reputation for providing high quality services and would like you to become part of this.
We are currently reconfiguring the GI service across North Yorkshire to provide General and Specialist Surgical services across our main sites (York and Scarborough) and the posts will involve working at both our main hospitals. The team will provide Upper GI services to a catchment population of approximately 550,000. Major elective surgery will be concentrated on the York site but elective surgery, diagnostic work and outpatient activity will be delivered in Scarborough with duties shared between the team. Emergency duties will be provided by the extended team of Consultants across both sites. Appointment to these posts will aid in our ambition to provide a comprehensive emergency biliary service and provide Upper GI specialist support to the Colorectal team.
The duties of the post include provision of elective benign upper gastrointestinal surgery service to the population of York and Scarborough and the surrounding area. An interest in either benign oesophagogastric disease or pancreaticobiliary disease or both would be preferable. Development of a subspecialist interest would be encouraged. Experience in advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures would be expected (including laparoscopic/minimally invasive management of biliary disease, surgical management of gastroesophageal reflux and morbid obesity). The successful appointee would be expected to take part in the emergency general surgery rota with emergency duties divided equally between York and Scarborough with a substantial incentive package to reflect the dual site working. Frequency of emergency duties is expected to be 1 in 9. The successful appointees will join the existing 4 Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons in provision of support for upper GI services on both the York and Scarborough sites and a shared commitment to cross site working would be expected. The Upper GI team will complement the existing Consultant Colorectal Surgeons in provision of a Specialist service across North Yorkshire. Although surgical management of upper GI malignant disease is not carried out at the Trust, the successful candidate would be expected to be involved in the diagnostic pathway for patients with Upper GI malignancy and contribute to the local MDT’s. Experience of Upper GI Endoscopy would be expected but there is no requirement to contribute to the Emergency Upper GI bleed on call endoscopy rota as this is provided by the Medical Gastroenterology team.
The department has close links with Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) offering interested candidates opportunities for undergraduate teaching or the development of management roles within the medical school.
Candidates must have a higher medical qualification (FRCS or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery, or be within Six months of obtaining their CCT, CESR, or European Community Rights at the time of interview (we encourage candidates outside this time frame to contact the department for more information).
The Trust offers an excellent Staff Benefits package to all employees, which includes salary sacrifice schemes and local discounts/offers. In addition you will receive an excellent Study leave package to support your on-going professional development; we can also provide a competitive relocation package.
