We are seeking two motivated and energetic registered nurse (RN adult) or operating department practitioners to come and join our team working in adult and/or children’s’ recovery units. These positions will be offered on as either a 12 month or 9 month secondment.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust provides services to some 1.3 million people living in Southampton and south Hampshire, plus specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services and children's intensive care to more than 3 million people in central southern England, the Channel Islands and the Falkland Islands.

The Trust is also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and partners including the Medical Research Council and Welcome Trust, with which the theatre department have strong links.  In April 2012, the Trust became a major trauma centre, as part of the national reconfiguration of trauma and emergency services.

There are currently 31 operating theatres in the trust, with 27 theatres and 5 recovery units, on the Southampton General Hospital site.  These theatres cover a wide range of adult and children’s surgical services, including orthopaedics, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic and vascular, ENT, max-fax, urology and general surgery, and perform over 34,000 operations per year.  .

This post will enable the successful applicant the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in caring for post-operative patients; in particular the management of airway issues, pain management and high-dependency patients.  The units care for a large number of acutely unwell adults and children, and offers opportunities to work on the surgical day unit on a rotational basis.

Recovery nursing provides the opportunity to care for patients individually with direct support and supervision from senior nurses/ODPs, anaesthetists and Matrons. Through excellent team work, we meet patient’s personal and specific care needs.

At UHS, we are also able to offer significant educational opportunities, including:

  • In-house theatre and anaesthetic courses
  • Leadership development courses
  • University post-qualifying modules (such as mentorship, care of the deteriorating patient, leadership & management of change)
  • Link nurse/practitioner opportunities

Southampton is a vibrant city, close to the New Forest, access to sailing and water sports in the Solent and all that you would expect from a University city.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
