This is a replacement post, providing a tertiary service for both malignant and non-malignant haematology in Wessex and the Channel Islands. The post holder will join a team of 4 paediatric oncologists, one associate professor in paediatric oncology and a paediatric haematologist in the regional paediatric oncology / haematology unit.
Tertiary services include the diagnosis and management of children with leukaemia, bone marrow failure syndromes and myelodysplasia. High dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue is performed and there is a paediatric apheresis service for stem cell collection. Southampton is a designated comprehensive care centre for haemophilia, providing a regional service for both adults and children with congenital bleeding disorders and thrombotic problems. There is an expanding ethnic population affected by major haemoglobin disorders. All aspects of care as recommended in the national guidelines can be provided, including transcranial Doppler screening and erythrocytapheresis.
All major paediatric specialities are provided in the Trust and include allergy, cardiology, ENT, gastroenterology, urology, nephrology, neonatology (level 3), neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics (including spinal), paediatric intensive care, paediatric and neonatal surgery, endocrinology and diabetes, respiratory medicine and radiology. The post holder would be expected to advise on haematological problems within the various sub-specialities. The hospital offers ample opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and excellent facilities for research and clinical care.
The Haematology laboratory at Southampton University Hospital is highly automated and provides a comprehensive range of routine and specialist services including malignant haematology, molecular pathology, thrombosis and haemostasis and HPLC for haemoglobin disorders. There will be an opportunity to participate in the development of the malignant haematological diagnostic service.
We are looking to appoint a well motivated individual with a broad general interest in all aspects of paediatric haematology, both clinical and laboratory. We would be happy to consider candidates with training in adult haematology, seeking paediatric experience, as well as those fully trained in paediatric haematology. The post holder would be fully supported in gaining extra experience and training in any specific areas needed.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English. Applicants should have a CCT or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of the AAC may also apply. Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.
