University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust - More jobs by this advertiser

Applications are invited to apply for the post of senior fellow in paediatric neurosciences (32 hpw), which includes a clinical commitment to provide the paediatric neurosciences ward and paediatric medical unit and aims to provide further clinical training and research opportunities in paediatric neurosciences.  This post is fixed term for 12 months.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The paediatric neurosurgical service is a regional service admitting approximately 200 children per year. It covers trauma, neurosurgical emergencies and elective neurosurgical procedures for the Wessex region. The neurosurgical service is closely allied to the paediatric neurology service, which offers regional neurological services for the Wessex region.  UHS provides facilities for the paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgical programme, trauma, neurosurgery, neonatal and paediatric surgery, as well as general and specialist paediatric medical emergencies. The latter include haematology and oncology, neurology, nephrology, endocrine, allergy and respiratory medicine. The paediatric neurosciences services are within a purpose-built 6-bedded unit.

The paediatric neurology service has established peripatetic clinics in Portsmouth, Poole, Basingstoke, Winchester, Salisbury, Chichester, the Isle of Wight, Jersey and Dorchester. Features of the present in-patient service include close liaison with Paediatric Neurosurgery and multidisciplinary in-patient assessment at Bursledon House of problems with behavioural, cognitive, educational, psychological and psychiatric aspects.  A purpose built Paediatric Intensive Care Unit on level D offers intensive care to the highest standards with a recent PICAnet report rating the unit number one for outcomes. An epilepsy surgery service includes input to joint clinics, interdisciplinary meetings and videotelemetry. Specialist clinics are run in complex epilepsy, vagal nerve stimulator, transitional epilepsy, neuromuscular conditions, neurometabolic, neuro-oncology, neonatal neurology, complex motor, intrathecal baclofen, headache, demyelination, and neurogenetics.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Clinical duties are based on the Paediatric Neurosciences Unit and paediatric medical wards at Southampton General Hospital.

Main duties will be to ensure that there is continuity of care for all neurosurgical and tertiary neurology patients. This will include admitting all elective and emergency patients [alongside other trainees within the team], co-ordinating medical management with neurosurgical and neurology colleagues and supporting the paediatric neurology service. The fellow will work closely with speciality consultants to ensure all patients have accurate and current management plans. Details of the work schedule are included in the attached timetable, but beyond the clinical duties on the Neurosciences Unit, there is considerable flexibility to include other aspects of the post, especially further neurosciences training and research and engagement with the neonatal neurology service.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The post would be appropriate for trainees in paediatric neurology or paediatrics with an interest in neurology or neurodevelopment.
