This locum opportunity is to cover a maternity leave starting October 1, 2020 at a surgical Ophthalmology practice in Red Deer, AB. The length of the locum is negotiable between 6-12 months.

Brand new Ophthalmology practice in a shared specialty clinic. There are two fully equipped exam lanes, a tech room, a testing room with all new equipment including a Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000, Zeiss IOL master 700, Zeiss Visucam 224, Zeiss ATLAS 9000 and Zeiss Humphrey Field Analyzer 860. Clinic uses Accuro EMR that is cloud based and can be accessed from home. Three fully trained and friendly staff will be available to the locum, as well as practice management and billing services (if needed). Surgical privileges will be given at both Innisfail and Red Deer Hospital, pending the application approval process. The locum will have access to one OR day a week and two minor procedure days a month. There is access to a YAG and Argon laser. There is ability for On-Call coverage.

The city has an extensive trail system that can be used 365 days a year for biking, walking, and cross-country skiing. An ideal city for people who enjoy the outdoors, and is a short drive to Sylvan Lake, Banff and Jasper National parks. Located half way between Calgary and Edmonton, two international airports are approximately an hour away. Red Deer is Alberta’s third most populous city with a population of over 100,000 people, and a catchment area of over 400,000.


Eligible applicants must also be:

- Certified or eligible for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification;

- Have completed ophthalmology residency (in Canada preferred);

- Be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta

- Must have appropriate work permits or citizenship to practice in Canada


Compensation is fee-for-service and call stipends; approximate billing amounts can be discussed in person. Competitive income. Overhead cost can be discussed in person. The practice already has a large waiting list for both surgical and non-surgical consults. Referral base largely from optometrists and GPs in Central Alberta.
