Online applications are invited for a full time speciality doctor in Palliative Medicine at Mountbatten Hampshire Hospice. Applicants wishing to work less than full time are encouraged to apply and the post can be split between two part time applicants to make up to 1.2 WTE. There is a 1/6 on-call commitment (pro-rata) to cover the inpatient unit.

This exciting opportunity will suit a doctor who already has some experience in Palliative Medicine. The applicant may be planning to follow a career in the specialty but wish to have additional experience prior to application for Specialty Training. It may also be of interest to doctors in other disciplines who would like to further develop their interest in Palliative Medicine.

Although this is not a training post, training will be given and there will be opportunities to enhance the potholders’ e-portfolio.

Depending on the previous experience of the applicant and the needs of the service, the post-holder may be involved in the care of patients admitted to Mountbatten inpatient unit, the community team or, outpatients.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The post holder will be joining a friendly, enthusiastic and dynamic multidisciplinary team. The medical team comprises two Consultants, an Associate Specialist, 2 Specialist Registrars and 2 GP trainees. We have a 21 bedded In-Patient Unit (IPU), a large day, self-help and rehabilitation centre, a community nursing team, Psychosocial care, Bereavement Service and an education team. The hospice serves a population of around 500,000 and covers Southampton, and parts of West Hampshire. It is a registered charity and company. Mountbatten Hampshire currently employs approximately 130 staff and benefits from the support of over 100 volunteers. We pride ourselves on delivering the highest standard of care and support to patients and their families, and constantly strive to ensure we reach as many people as possible, whenever and wherever they may need us.

Over the last year, Mountbatten Isle of Wight and Mountbatten Hampshire have developed a unique partnership, with one senior team leading both organisations, overseen by a single board of trustees. A new and innovative five-year strategy is currently being developed, focusing on creating a new model of care which will concentrate on reaching more people, care coordination, our key messages and story, volunteers, partnerships and integration, and survival and sustainability. As the Health and Social Care system around us continues to be challenged, we will expand our expertise and specialism over the coming years to ensure no-one is ignored or denied access to what they need as they begin to consider and prepare for the last phase of life.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

To work with the established multidisciplinary team providing specialist palliative and end of life care to patients admitted to Mountbatten Hampshire inpatient unit. Depending on service needs and applicant’s experience, there may also be opportunity to work with the Community Team conducting domiciliary visits, in outpatients and within the Day centre (Hazel Centre).

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Applicants should have full GMC registration with license to practice.

At least four years’ postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis) with at least two years in a relevant specialty is essential.

MRCP (UK) full diploma or MCEM (Full) or MRCGP (full, with CCT) or MRCS (Full) or FRCA (Full) or FRCS or EEA eligibility are essential. Other qualifications or previous experience in Palliative Medicine or medical education would be desirable.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.  This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.   UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
