Applicants are invited to apply for the post of consultant child & adolescent psychiatrist. This post is permanent.

We are looking for a versatile, enthusiastic individual to join our well established Paediatric Liaison team at Southampton Children’s Hospital.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Paediatric Liaison (Hospital CAMHS) team operates 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. It takes referrals of under 18s from medical, nursing and allied professionals within Child Health and elsewhere in the hospital. The team provides assessment and management of a variety of emotional and behavioural difficulties and psychiatric disorders. The team provides daily input to the management of some inpatients, for instance young people suffering from anorexia nervosa. The team provides assessment and management of under 18s who present at the A & E department in working hours with, for instance, deliberate self harm or psychiatric illness. Forms of input include individual work/ CBT, family work, parenting support, medication and liaison with local CAMHS services. The team ensures smooth running of the rota for review of under 18s admitted with self harm, who are seen by clinicians from the surrounding CAMHS teams. The team also provides staff teaching and support, including regarding dealing with emotionally traumatic or worrying situations. Within the Children’s Hospital there are close working relationships with paediatric consultants, junior doctors, the multidisciplinary team and paediatric psychology. The post holder will have close working relationships with Dr Charlie Keys, Child Health Clinical Lead, Victor Taylor, Matron for Paediatric Liaison and Bursledon House and Sarah Eales, Mental Health Matron for the Trust.

There are close working relationships with the Community CAMHS teams locally. Hampshire CAMHS services run by Sussex Partnership NHS Trust serve the county, except for the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth. There are particularly close links with Solent NHS Trust which runs Horizon, the Southampton Community CAMHS service a mile away from UHS, as well as Portsmouth Community CAMHS and the BRS in Southampton, a multiagency team providing input for children in crisis and for looked after children. The two Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists in UHS participate in the monthly Solent Consultants’ meeting which comprises a business meeting and CPD component. The postholder will be expected to join one of the peer review CPD groups available locally (eg at Horizon).

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The clinical duties involve assessment and management of children referred as inpatients, outpatients or from the Emergency Department. There is also involvement in Bursledon House, a joint paediatric / child mental health inpatient unit. There is a teaching session based in Solent NHS Trust to deliver Family Psychiatry week to University of Southampton medical students. The post is based in Southampton Children’s Hospital (SCH) which is part of University Hospital Southampton Trust. There is one other Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry based at SCH.

You will be responsible for overseeing the CAMHS-PL services at SCH, along with the existing CAMHS Consultant. It is expected that you will be primarily involved in the paediatric liaison service with some involvement in Bursledon House. You will be expected to develop some particular links with some of the specialist paediatric services.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a versatile, proactive and enthusiastic individual to work with the existing CAMHS team at UHS to develop the profile of mental health care in general and specialised paediatric patient populations.
